Writing Center Online Assistance
| To request an on-line appointment, please follow the e-mail link below. Online appointment requests take a minimum of 48 hours to process. |
Providing assistance to LCC students with writing projects in courses across the
curriculum.
Is an online appointment right for you? Considerations before scheduling an online appointment:
- Do you have stable internet access?
- Are you familiar with Desire2Learn, or have you completed an online course at LCC?
- Do you live a considerable distance from campus that makes coming in for a face-to-face appointment impractical?
- Do you have enough time to allow for a minimum of 48 hours to schedule an appointment?
- Do you have specific questions about your assignment?
Ex: Are my topic sentences strong? Is my introduction effective? Etc.
If you feel an online appointment is right for you, here's what to expect:
- A scheduled, 50 minute appointment with an attentive Peer Writing Assistant
- A live, online interactive chat about your writing via Desire2Learn
"Visits to the Writing Center gave me one-on-one
guidance that enhanced my understanding of the writing process. A better
understanding of the writing process brought me the confidence to explore my
writing potential."
- John Worthy, Human Services Major
Our Online Writing Assistants (OWAs) will be available to work with you on
your writing during your requested time (within reason and subject to
availability).
The writing assistant will be able to help you with brainstorming ideas,
generating a rough draft, polishing your writing, and developing more effective
strategies for writing. (They will not edit your papers for you.)
Please remember, it may be easier and more effective to visit The Writing Center
in person for assistance with some concerns (eg. MLA/APA documentation). To set
up a face-to-face session on campus in The Writing Center, call (517) 483-1907
or stop by 251 Arts & Sciences. For more information, visit the
Writing Center homepage.
Now the important part! Scheduling an online appointment:
1. Send us an e-mail message at least 48 hours in advance to schedule a meeting time. (If your request is not submitted during normal business hours, it may take longer than 48 hours to process.) In your message, it is important that you provide the following information accurately and completely. Instead of using this hyperlink to send us a message, you can send it directly to penninj@lcc.edu. (Note: It may be easiest to simply copy the following into your message):
- Full Name (First/Last):
- Course for which you are requiring assistance (Please provide course code, i.e. WRIT 121):
- What project are you working on? Please describe it briefly.
- What days and times are you available to meet with us? (Again, any reasonable request will be considered, subject to availability, but please give us a couple options.):
- Telephone number (in case we have technical difficulties):
- TUID (technology user ID):
Please note that failure to provide accurate or complete information will create a delay in setting up your appointment. Double check to be sure you've provided everything required above!
2. You will then receive a message back confirming your meeting time OR asking you to select another day/time if a writing assistant is not available during the times you've requested.
3. In the confirmation message, you will receive instructions for uploading your paper into the Writing Center's Desire2Learn Group site and how to access our chat room for your appointment.
However, due to limited staff availability, we might not be able to accommodate every request for on-line assistance. We are eager to assist you with your writing needs. Please feel free to contact us.
