Coach Andy Merchant enters his second season as Head Baseball Coach at Lansing Community College.  In his first year at LCC, Merchant guided the Stars to a 17-24 record (7-19 MCCAA) and the best season by the team since 2009.  Focusing on aggressive pitching and base running, the Stars stole 82 bases, up from 18 the previous season and also scored 28 more runs than in 2013.  On the mound, the team ERA dropped two and a half runs per game in conference, from 7.49 in 2013 to 4.99 in 2014.

Merchant previously served as an assistant at Olivet College and also spent three years as the Head Coach of Kitsmiller RV in the Lansing Men’s Wooden Bat League.  He founded Kitsmiller RV Baseball Club and guided them to three post-season appearances in three years.  The team consisted of top collegiate players from all levels and improved each season.

Merchant has an extensive playing career, beginning at Holt HS, where he set the record for career strikeouts by a pitcher.  In 1996, Merchant played for East Lansing Post 205, where he led the team in games started on the mound.  He went on to pitch at Alma College, where he was a key contributor on their 1999 MIAA Championship team.  Merchant played for various teams over 15 years in the Lansing Men’s League, in addition to several years in the Gratiot County League for the Fulton Sultans.

Merchant is a 2000 graduate of Alma College, where he graduated with a B.A. in Business Management.  He lives in Dewitt with his wife Megan and his son, Eli.

Assistant Coach:  Billy Salazar

BJ Salazar returns for his 2nd year with the Stars.  Salazar’s primary responsibilities include working with hitters and infielders.  Salazar is a Lansing native and Lansing Eastern HS graduate.  He attended Siena Heights University in Adrian, MI and received a Bachelor’s degree in Sports Management after graduating in 2013.  Salazar played many positions in his four years at Siena Heights, but worked primarily as a middle-infielder.

Salazar’s playing career includes four years for East Lansing Post 205, where he twice helped lead the team to the Palomino World Series in California.  He currently plays in the Lansing Men’s Wooden Bat League.

Assistant Coach:  Ron Murdock

Ron Murdock returns for his 2nd year on the staff at LCC.  Murdock brings with him over 40 years of baseball coaching experience.  Ron began his coaching career in 1971 with Fulton of the Gratiot County League and remains the Head Coach of the Fulton Sultans men’s team.  His Sultans have played in many semi-pro and amateur tournaments throughout the state over his 44 years in charge and has coached eight players that have gone on to play professionally.  In 2014, Coach Murdock was inducted into the Gratiot County League Hall-of-Fame.

Murdock is the Vice President of the Gratiot County League, a position he has held for the past 20 years.  He founded an 18U wooden-bat league in Gratiot County and coached a Fulton team.  The league and his team were in existence for seven years.

For the past four years, Murdock has coached an 18U Saint John’s High School summer league team, as well as their wood-bat fall ball team.

Coach Murdock assists with all aspects of the program, including recruiting.  Ron is from Perrinton, MI and currently resides in Middleton.
