Join the exciting new field of Health Information Technology! By the year 2014, American health care professionals will be required to have in place a universal electronic database to maintain and share health records within the industry. Over the next five years, it is estimated that 50,000 new jobs will be created to administrate and assist with this process.  What makes Health IT such an exciting field? Using a comprehensive curriculum provided by the Office of National Coordinator (ONC) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Lansing Community College has joined 16 other community colleges within the Midwest Community College Health Information Technology Consortium and 84 community colleges nationwide to offer vital training programs leading to Health Information Technology certification.

All programs are delivered in a hybrid format (a combination of face-to-face instruction combined with online assignments). Starting June 1, a 100% online version of the Implementation Support Specialist will be offered -- contact Sarah Linz for details and registration.

Programs offered in the following Health IT roles: 

Implementation Support Specialist installs and verifies Health IT systems in clinical and public health settings to ensure functional and effective use of the system. These individuals provide on-site user support above and beyond what is provided by the vendor, to be sure the technology is configured and functions properly. This program is 180 hours.  Click for syllabus

Implementation Manager provides on-site management of mobile-adoption support teams before, during, and after implementation of Health IT systems in clinical and public health settings. This program is 192 hours. Click for syllabus

Clinician has a background and experience of a licensed clinical professional and assists in reorganizing the work of a provider to take full advantage of the features of Health IT to improve health care. This program is 100 hours. Click for syllabus

Trainer designs and delivers training programs, using adult learning principles, to employees in clinical and public health settings. This program is 100 hours. Click for syllabus

Successful participants will be prepared to take the National Competency Exam offered by the Office of the National Coordinator.

Recommended background for prospective trainees:

• An Associates degree or higher (or equivalent experience) in information technology or a healthcare-related field (nursing, respiratory therapist, etc).
• (Information Technology Professionals)  Two years experience working with health information systems, electronic health records, database management systems, or other related field.
• (Healthcare Professionals)  One- to two-year medical office or hospital experience directly related to medical record/health information processes.

Health IT Students who are also certified through AHIMA (such as RHIAs, RHITs) can receive 20 CE hours for the Health IT Training by submitting their certificate of completion to AHIMA. Also Health IT students with AHIMA certifications can receive 5 CE hours for passing the HIT Pro competency exam.
