Preparing for the Interviewing Process

Read the questions below. Record the questions on a tape recorder, leaving space to answer the questions to simulate an interview setting. Now sit in front of a mirror and answer the questions, or ask a friend to listen to you. If you want a formal rehearsal ask our office to interview you, or do a video taping.

When you answer these questions, avoid a one sentence response and negative answers that reflect poorly on your company, manager or co-workers. If you are directly asked a negative question, such as your weaknesses, start with a positive. Briefly describe the behaviors and how you are overcoming the situation.

Education:

  • Why did you major in ___, at______ community college?

  • What kinds of specialized training have you had to prepare you for this job?

  • What are your future educational goals?

Character traits:

  • What are your feelings about teamwork ?

  • What traits contribute to your success on the job?

  • Tell me about someone you admire?

  • Give me an example of how you last reacted to criticism at work?

  • How do you express yourself, if you have an unpopular viewpoint?

  • What things have disappointed you in life and what have you learned from that?

  • How would a friend describe you?

Management ability:

  • What have you done with your employees to make them more effective?

  • What do you do if you are assigned a team project and the focus changes after several weeks on the project?

  • What characteristics make a good team leader?

Career objectives:

  • Why do you want this job and how does it fit with your career objectives?

  • What are your long-term career goals?

  • When would you consider switching careers in life?

  • Why are you interested in leaving your current job?

Suitability for the job:

  • What do you know about this organization?

  • What trends do you see in this industry?

  • What interests you about us?

  • How can we benefit from hiring you?

  • What skills do you possess which place you above other candidates?

  • What kinds of questions do you have?

  • How is this job different then your last job?

  • What are your weaknesses or areas you need improvement on?

Salary requirements:

  • What are your salary expectations?

  • What is your salary history?
