The professional track program is two years in length with a limited number of openings available each year. Prior to acceptance into the professional track, required prerequisite college courses must be completed. The program begins each fall semester with a cohort of students and upon successful completion of the 80 credit hour program, an Associate of Applied Science Dental Hygiene degree is granted from the college. The curriculum is taught using small group instruction with experienced and dedicated faculty providing hands-on training with state of the art equipment, including dental hygiene clinical experience in our on-campus patient care clinic.
The Dental Hygiene Program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, a specialized accrediting body recognized by the Council on Postsecondary Accreditation and by the United States Department of Education.

National and Regional
Graduates from this program are eligible to take the National Dental Hygiene Board (NDHBE) examination and the Northeast Regional Board (NERB) examination. These exams are required by states for licensing to practice as a dental hygienist. Additionally, students may sit for two optional regional exams on local anesthesia and nitrous oxide sedation.

Nature of Work
In the dental office, the dentist and the dental hygienist work together to meet the oral health needs of patients. Since each state has its own specific regulations regarding their responsibilities, the range of services performed by hygienists varies from state to state. Some of the services provided by dental hygienists may include:
- taking and developing dental radiographs (x-rays)
- removing calculus, plaque and stains (hard and soft deposits) from all surfaces of teeth
- applying preventative materials to the teeth (e.g., sealants and fluorides)
- applying antimicrobial therapies to assist in prevention of oral disease progression
- teaching patients appropriate oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health
- teaching patients about the relationship between oral health and systemic diseases
- counseling patients about good nutrition and its impact on oral health
- making impressions of patient’s teeth for study casts
- performing anxiety and pain management techniques through the use of nitrous oxide sedation and local anesthetic procedures
Dental hygienists are projected to be one of the 30 fastest growing occupations. Populations growth and greater retention of natural teeth will stimulate demand for dental hygienists. Additionally, ongoing research linking oral health and general health will continue to spur the demand for preventative services by hygienists. Opportunities for part-time work and flexible schedules are common. The majority of hygienists work in private practice dental offices. However, opportunities exist in sales, education and public health clinics, correctional institutions and managed care organizations.
Skills You Need
Dental hygienists should work well with others and must have good manual dexterity to work in patients' mouths. High school students interested in becoming a dental hygienist should take courses in biology chemistry, and mathematics.
Median annual wages of dental hygienists were $62,250 in 2010. Dental hygienists earn salaries that compare to other health care professionals. However, earnings vary by geographic location, employment setting, and years of experience. Benefits vary substantially by practice setting and may be contingent upon full-time employment. According to a 2009 survey conducted by the American Dental Hygienist Association, about half of all hygienists reported receiving some form of employment benefits. Of those receiving benefits, paid vacation, sick leave, and retirement plans were the most common.

General Clinic Information
The Dental Hygiene Clinic at Lansing Community College offers preventive dental hygiene services to the public.
The program provides dental hygiene care to almost 2,000 people annually.
This care is made possible by the Dental Hygiene Program of the College, which provides education to students for future practice in private dental offices, hospitals, and public health agencies.
The clinic does not provide restorative dentistry (fillings), oral surgery (removal of teeth), orthodontics (braces), or dentures.
Because the Dental Hygiene Program is designed and maintained for teaching procedures, scheduling and dental hygiene services differ from those of a private dental office.
Those accepted for treatment are patients whose dental problems have teaching value and who have the extra time required for treatment. All dental care is performed by student dental hygienists who are carefully supervised by licensed dental hygiene faculty and a clinic dentist. Therefore, the instructors constantly review and evaluate the treatment rendered by the student which affects the length of visits and the number of appointments required.
Before you decide if you wish to be considered for treatment, please read the following information that describes what you may expect as a patient in the Dental Hygiene Clinic.
Becoming a clinic patient
As a possible patient, you must first have a dental screening. A dental screening allows the student dental hygienist to secure the necessary dental x-rays. With faculty supervision the student dental hygienist will complete a brief assessment of your oral health needs to ensure that you meet the needs of a teaching institution. A student dental hygienist will be assigned to you that has the skills necessary to care for you.
To schedule a screening appointment, please call (517) 483-1458. Screenings take place in the clinic Tuesday - Thursday by appointment only.
If an appointment is not immediately available to you following your screening, you will be notified by phone when an appointment becomes available. The length of the wait for this first appointment can be from one to several weeks, depending upon the time in the school year and your individual oral health needs.
Patients with a medical or dental condition that hinders proper treatment may not be acceptable for a clinic appointment (i.e., uncontrolled high blood pressure). Children less than five (5) years of age are not considered mature enough for clinical care in this teaching clinic and all children age 12 or under must be accompanied by an adult. Minors (under 18 years of age) must have the Medical/Dental History form signed by a parent or legal guardian at each appointment and before services are rendered.
Policy on Bloodborne Pathogens and Infectious Disease:
LCC Dental Hygiene students are required to treat all patients assigned, regardless of the disease state of the patient. The student is expected to follow standard precautions with all patients. The Americans with Disabilities Act forbids discrimination against patients with HIV; therefore, it is the policy of the LCC Dental Hygiene Program that students are required to treat all patients assigned, regardless of the disease state of the patient. Appointments and services
Your first appointment will begin
with a screening examination,
to determine which of your dental needs can be met in the Dental Hygiene Clinic.
Screening appointments are necessary for any new patients to the clinic. During the screening appointment patients receive a complete mouth x-ray series and panoramic radiograph (panorex). At that time the patient will have an oral assessment done by the clinical faculty and they will be assigned to a student who has the skills to care for that patient.

- Prophylaxis (cleaning of teeth)
- Periodontal Debridement (deep cleaning)
A specific plan for your treatment will be explained to you. With the aid of x-ray pictures, a faculty member and student will determine your dental condition and recommend a general outline of dental hygiene treatment and a way to complete it. Generally, a complete prophylaxis (teeth cleaning) for a patient who has regular dental care requires a minimum of one to two appointments of two to four hours each.
Patients should arrange an appointment with a dentist of their choice for a comprehensive oral examination and diagnosis following completion of the services provided at this clinic. The dental hygiene clinic does not provide a comprehensive dental exam for patients. X-ray pictures will be taken after review of the medical/dental history. Need for x-ray pictures is approved by the faculty dental hygienist or clinic dentist and is dependent upon the presence or absence of dental decay, gum disease, and frequency of dental visits.
Your radiographs (x-ray pictures) will be mailed to your dentist (or copies can be mailed to your home address) upon your request. We must have a release signed by the patient on file according to the Health Information Protection (HIPPA) forms. We require five (5) working days to process and mail your radiographs to your dentist. The patient should expect that their dentist will charge a fee for diagnosing the radiographs and the planning of the patient's treatment based on their findings.
Payment for services rendered:
A reasonable fee is charged for all dental hygiene care provided by the Dental Hygiene Clinic. One fee is charged, per preventive series of appointments, regardless of the number of visits required to complete your care. Fees are to be paid at the screening appointment.

The Dental Hygiene Clinic is located in the Health and Human Services Building (HHS), Room 107 in downtown Lansing. This building is located just west of the LCC Parking Ramp on Grand Avenue, and just south of Saginaw St, between Capital Avenue and Grand Avenue.

Visitor parking is available in the LCC Parking Ramp on Grand Avenue parking structure directly east of the Health and Human Services Building. It can be entered from Grand Avenue. There is also a City of Lansing parking structure located on the corner of North Capital Avenue and Shiawassee Street. Enter off of North Capital Avenue. As you leave your car, note the level where you parked. A campus map and handicapper parking information is available from the clinic receptionist.

Patient Rights and Responsibilities
Please read our complete statement on your rights and responsibilities as a patient.
Just as your time is valuable, so is that of your student dental hygienist. You can help the student, and speed up your treatment, by being available when your presence is required and by arriving promptly for each scheduled appointment. You should plan on spending a minimum of two hours for each visit once treatment has begun.
If you must cancel an appointment, please give 24-hours or more notice by calling the Clinic Reception Office (517) 483-1458.
Appointments will be rescheduled as the schedule allows.
The student's grade is determined by the completion of patients. If you are not available for your scheduled appointment, the student's grade is negatively affected. Patients that cancel or change two or more. Treatment will be discontinued for patients who do not have the required amount of time, or for those who routinely break appointments or do not notify the student or clinic receptionist in advance. Two missed appointments will result in patient suspension of at least one year and possibly longer.
Your cooperation will enhance the students learning experience and will assist with your treatment.

Selective Admission Information - May 1st Application Deadline
The Dental Hygiene Program is a selective admission program. Students meeting prerequisite requirements will be considered for admission to the program. Additional points will be awarded for admission based on such categories as residency, prerequisite and general education courses taken and GPA, dental assisting experiences, and college degrees.
All admission procedures are coordinated through the Enrollment Services Office, which has responsibility for distributing, receiving, and dating application forms. Therefore, any student desiring admission into this program should contact the Enrollment Services Office, Gannon Building, Room 203, (517) 483-1200, email email@example.com to receive an application or go to www.lcc.edu/futurestars/apply/selective/ to print an application. The student may then contact the program advisor for further information. The student applicant is responsible for providing verification of other education experience information not contained in the current Lansing Community College official transcript.
The student applicant is REQUIRED to:
- Submit an application for selective admission to the Enrollment Services Office. Applications are held for two years. Applications must be resubmitted if the application is over one-year old. (May 1st deadline)
- Provide proof of graduation from an accredited high school or satisfactory completion of the General Education Development (GED) with an average score of 45 with no score less than 35. An official copy of the GED scores or high school transcript is requested for verification.
- Submit high school and college transcripts to the Admissions Office. (May 15th deadline)
- Attend an applicant advising seminar. Seminars are scheduled periodically throughout the year. Pre-registration is required by calling (517) 483-1457.
- Complete all prerequisite courses (www.lcc.edu/enrollment) with a cumulative 2.5 GPA and complete all other general education courses with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better. Each general education course (except prerequisite courses) must be completed with a minimum 2.0 grade or better.

All courses must be completed with a 2.0 or higher with the exception of the prerequisite courses which require a 2.5 or higher.
Recommendations and Suggestions:
- Students must complete all prerequisite courses with a 2.5 or higher in each course to be eligible for admission.
- Students who are considering transferring for a four-year degree are encouraged to take BIOL 201 and BIOL 202, rather than BIOL 145 for increased transferability.
- Students who complete the most courses listed (General Education and Other) with the highest grades will receive the most points for admission.
- All courses (except the prerequisite courses) must be completed with a 2.0 or higher.
- Points will be assigned in the Dental Assisting Experience and Post Secondary Degree Category based on the level of achievement in each category.
- Students must complete a Criminal Background Check.
- Current Cardiac Life Support Certification (Infant, Child, and Adult) is required throughout this program. (Must be the American Heart Association CPR for Health Care Providers). Certification must be valid for the entire 21-months of the Dental Hygiene Program (taken no earlier than June preceding the August start date of the program).
- Students must complete a physical exam and have all required immunizations current to include a yearly TB test and the Hepatitis series.

Motor, Cognitive, and Psychological Skills Essential for Dental Hygiene Students
1. Essential motor skills required to meet the class and clinical practice outcomes are:
STRENGTH: Perform physical activities requiring ability to push/pull objects/persons more than 50 pounds and possess hand-arm strength to control manual and power hand instruments and tools.
MANUAL DEXTERITY: Perform complex motor skills such as writing, typing; manipulative skills with fine instruments and devices, calibration of equipment. Have not impairment of the use of a foot, let, hand, fingers, or arm, and no other structural defect of limitation, which may interfere with the ability to control and safely operate medical/dental devices and instruments.
COORDINATION: Perform body coordination such as walking, filing, retrieving equipment; eye-hand coordination and arm-hand steadiness (i.e., use of hand instruments, taking blood pressures, calibration of instruments and equipment).
MOBILITY: Perform mobility skills such as walking, standing, prolonged standing or sitting in occasionally uncomfortable positions or very small spaces (i.e., 2 feet by 4 feet spaces).
VISUAL ABILITY: See objects far away, very close, and to discriminate fine detail and colors, and to see objects closely as in reading faces, dials, monitors, etc.
HEARING: Hear normal sounds with background noise and to distinguish sounds (i.e., pulse with sphygmomanometer, percussion of teeth, TMJ - temporomandibular joint - clicking/popping).
TACTILE ABILITY: Demonstrate tactile abilities sufficient to make physical assessments of soft and hard tissues (i.e., perform palpation, functions of physical assessments and oral examinations, functions related to therapeutic intervention).
2. Essential cognitive skills required to meet the class and clinical practice outcomes:
CONCENTRATION: Concentrate on details with moderate amount of interruptions (i.e., patient and co-worker requests, alarms, equipment noise).
ATTENTION SPAN: Attend to task/functions that require up to 60 minutes in length and handle a variety of tasks for periods up to 8 hours. No mental, nervous, organic or functional disease or psychiatric disorder likely to interfere with the ability to coordinate treatment planning; work with other health care professionals and patients; coordinate treatment procedures; and safely operate medical/dental devices and instruments.
CONCEPTUALIZATION: Understand and relate to specific ideas, concepts, and theories generated and simultaneously discussed and implemented. Apply theory to a clinical situation.
MEMORY: Remember task/assignments given to self and others over both short and long periods of time (i.e., information gathered in assessing patients).
CRITICAL THINKING: Ability critical thinking ability sufficient for clinical judgment Identify cause-effect relationships in clinical situations and develop and implement treatment/care plans.
3. Essential psychological skills required to meet the class and clinical practice outcomes:
INTERPERSONAL: Demonstrate interpersonal abilities to interact with individuals, families, and groups from a variety of social, emotional, cultural, and intellectual backgrounds. Establish rapport with patients and colleagues.
COMMUNICATION: Communicate sufficiently for interaction with others in verbal and written form. Explain treatment procedures, initiate health teaching, document, and interpret health care actions and patient responses.
SUBSTANCE ABUSE: No current clinical diagnosis of alcoholism and must not use Schedule 1 drugs or other substances such as amphetamines, narcotics, or any other habit-forming drug except those substances or drugs prescribed by a licensed medical practitioner who is familiar with the individual's medical history and assigned duties and who has advised the individual that the prescribed substance or drug will not adversely affect the individual's ability to safely practice these health professions.
STRESS: Work with patients who may be very young or old, critically ill or injured, or mentally or physically deficient/impaired; work with a constantly changing group of staff and resident physicians, medical students, etc.
Environmental Conditions-Standard Precautions
Upon acceptance into the Dental Hygiene Program students will be notified regarding a mandatory online OSHA Blood-Borne Pathogen and Standard Precautions training session.
The charter of OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) is to prevent work-related injuries, illnesses, and deaths. Since OSHA was created in 1971, work-related deaths have decreased by approximately 62% and work-related injuries have decreased by 42%.
As a Dental Hygiene student you can expect exposure to blood, body tissues, and fluids. There is the potential of exposure to electrical hazards, hazardous waste materials, radiation, poisonous substances, chemicals, loud or unpleasant noises and high stress emergency situations. Students enrolled in the Dental Hygiene Program are at a slight risk for exposure to blood and body fluids and the potential does exist for transmission of blood-borne and other infectious diseases during patient care activities. The risk of HIV disease transmission from dental patients to members of the dental team are extremely low. Nevertheless, there is some small potential for this to occur. The Americans with Disabilities Act forbids discrimination against patients with HIV; therefore, students are required to treat all patients assigned, regardless of the disease state of the patient.
Applicants/students who are HIV/AIDS or HBV (Hepatitis) positive will not be barred from working, teaching, attending classes or participating in college sponsored activities, unless the applicant/student is unable to follow *Standard Precautions. All decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis. (*Standard Precautions are defined as: Consideration of all patients as being infected with pathogens and therefore applying infection control procedures to the care of all patients.)
Criminal Background Check
Admission to the Dental Hygiene Program will be denied if an individual is precluded from proving clinical privileges due to a criminal record pursuant to MCL 333.20173a.
Students may be denied admission to or continuation in the Dental Hygiene program for any of the following reasons:
- Physical or emotional health, which indicates impairment in ability to provide safe care to the public.
- Conduct not in accordance with the standards of a registered
- has given false information or has withheld material information;
- has been convicted of or pleaded guilty or nolo contendere to any crime which indicated the individual as unfit or incompetent to practice, or that the individual has deceived or defrauded the public;
- has used any drug to a degree that interferes with his or her fitness to practice dental hygiene;
- has engaged in conduct which endangers the public health.
