Mystery Festival

Think you've got what it takes to be a detective? Find out in this class, which combines mystery with scientific investigation, for an exciting educational experience. You will conduct hands-on forensic science tests on evidence found at a "crime scene". You will develop skills such as examining clues, analyzing and evaluating evidence, logical thinking, making inferences, problem-solving, and drawing conclusions. You will also use scientific experiments to solve the "crime", including chromatography, acid-base chemistry, dissolving substances, and thread comparison testing. While participating in the Mystery Festival, you will directly experience real-life applications of science and learn about career opportunities.

Do you think you have what it takes to be a detective? In this forensic science class, you will learn how to put your inquiring mind to work in solving crimes using the scientific method. Each day, you will learn new forensic science techniques to solve a mystery. Topics will include crime scene analysis, handwriting analysis and profiling, fingerprinting, DNA fingerprinting simulations, impression analysis, unknown powder identification, hair and fiber analysis, and blood typing.

Comic Book Illustration

Students will learn how to develop their very own comic book-style character in this class! Learn how to draw your character repeatedly in a variety of action poses, positions, and expressions, draw backgrounds, learn and apply panel-to-panel story transitions, add text and dialogue to panels, and finally, finish one page of continuous panel-to-panel artwork.

You will learn how to design and build a unique mini-robot in this hands-on science class. You will scavenge the parts to build your robot from small electronics and appliances you bring in from home. Each mini-robot built will be different, and the more items you bring in the bigger variety of gears, motors, wheels, pulleys and other parts you will have as your building materials. You will develop your science, math, engineering, and problem solving skills in this class.

Be the producer of your own film, or be the star in the film we make! Students will be viewing film, and also will be outdoors to learn what it takes to tell a story through video production. Be creative, and learn what it takes to develop the lights, camera, ACTION! Bring your ideas, your talents, and your curiosity - there is no need to bring your own camera.

Intro to Robotics provides hands-on experiences with programming and building robots. This class allows students to use their own creativity and imagination along with problem solving and communications skills. Students will spend time learning about the foundations of programming and construction and then apply their knowledge in exciting challenges! In this course, the students will have the opportunity to work with the LEGO Mindstorm Robotics Invention System 2.0 and programming language.

Students will love this hands-on studio course where you will learn and practice a variety of different traditional painting techniques. Develop your skills by painting landscapes and seascapes, animals, still life, and portraits. Scratch is a programming language that makes it easy to create your own interactive stories, animations, games, music, and art - and share your creations on the web. Created by the MIT Media Lab, it is intended to motivate for further learning through playful experimenting and creating projects such as interactive animations and games. As young people create and share Scratch projects, they learn important mathematical and computational ideas, while also learning to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively.
