Give a Gift of Scholarship this Holiday Season
LANSING 11/30/12 – The Lansing Community College (LCC) Foundation recently kicked off its annual Giving Campaign to raise funds for scholarships for LCC students in need of financial assistance. This year’s theme is ichange, noting that a donor’s gift can change a life and a community.
The Foundation provides some $325,000 in scholarship aid each year but it isn’t enough to help all the students in need. Approximately 40 percent of students enrolled at LCC come from families that are low-income according to standards defined by the federal Pell Grant program. Many are the first in their families to attend college.
“Our students include recent high-school graduates, single mothers who delayed pursuing their higher education goals, working men and women who want to advance their careers, and individuals who have lost their jobs and need to re-invent themselves,” said Dan McKean, Executive Director of the LCC Foundation. ”They are our community’s future nurses, lab techs, police officers, EMTs, computer programmers, welders, machinists, doctors, lawyers, and teachers.”
McKean said while LCC’s tuition remains among the lowest of all Michigan community colleges, many students still struggle to make ends meet and rely on scholarships to help them achieve their academic goals.
The LCC Foundation has made it easy to donate. Individuals and businesses can donate online at www.ichange.lcc.edu, or they can text ichange to 56512. Donors can target their gift to one or more of the following:
· General scholarship support
· Emergency needs fund
· Specific programs or departments at LCC, including Veteran’s Services, Women’s Resource Center, nursing programs, performing arts, even child care (Early LCC).
· Named scholarship
The named scholarship can be established by individuals in their name or in honor of a loved one or someone they admire. All it takes is a minimum annual donation of $1,000 a year for three years.

The annual campaign will run through the end of January.
