Kristy S.

Bio: My name is Kristy and I am 27 years old. I grew up in the country but now live in Lansing. I am a mom of a 5 year old little boy, Cameron, and a 6 month old daughter, Isabelle. I am also a wife to Patrick. My favorite things to do would be going on family vacations, shopping for bargains, singing Karaoke and photography. I like to have people around me all the time. It is important to me to feel needed by my family and friends. I specialize in caring for people who are less fortunate and have a background in caring for siblings, my mother who died when I was 16 from breast cancer.

I have also done adult foster care and even now have family and friends living at our house that I care for. For a long time, I have desired to get a Nursing degree. Finally, the time is right for me to go to school and make my dreams, reality. When I am done with earning my Nursing degree, the goal is for my husband to attend culinary arts school, which is his dream job.

Our ultimate goal is to own and operate a bed & breakfast in a coastal town. Somewhere we can summer. He can cook and I can be in charge of hospitality. Then returning to Lansing in the Fall/Winter for school for the kids and to spend the holidays with family.

My main drive in coming to LCC is to make a better life for our family. To break the chain of uneducatedness (is that a word?) and poverty in my family.

Q&A with Kristy...

Why did you choose Lansing Community College?
I have heard a lot of good things about nurses that earned their degree from LCC. I want the best education I can get and I feel it is available at LCC. Also, it is close to my home in South Lansing.

What inspires you?
Time with my husband, son, and daughter. They are my whole world. They make all the studying, juggling responsibilities and schedules all worthwhile. They motivate and recharge me every weekend and every evening we spend together.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?
Teleporter, definitely hands down! How great would that be? Cut out "Drive Time" and traveling time! I would be able to get so much more done in a day. Or maybe a shape shifter so I could be more than one of myself and be many places doing many things all at once. It's a toss up I guess.

What famous person would you like to meet and why?
I thought about this question long and hard and as much as I tried I could come up with anything. I really wanted an intellectual answer like Albert Einstein or something but my answer is Vin Diesel and for no other reason than he is so good looking it isn't even right!

What do you do for fun? Other than school!
I love going to the movies or watching movies at home. I play guitar in the worship band at church. I enjoy flower and vegetable gardening, scrap booking and Karaoke. Also I like quilting, planning and organizing, journaling, camping and eating ice cream.

If you won $3 million, what would you do with the money?
1st thing I would do is give 10% to the church then I would save whatever I needed to pay out taxes. After that I would pay off all my debt and pay off a house and a car for my family. I would help out my brothers with whatever they needed. Then I would invest some in various accounts and probably go on a really sweet vacation with my family.

What are you hoping to or have you gained from being part of the TRiO program?
I hope that TRiO can help me succeed in getting my degree. Mostly what I hope to utilize is the Tutorial Services. Help with parking costs and just to be a part of a group of people who are all working hard to achieve their goals.
