Lesson 3: Guidelines for Developing Program-Level Outcomes

Stark and Lattuca adapted the following list of guidelines for program outcomes from the American Dental Schools Association, and include them in their book, Shaping the College Curriculum.

  1. "[Program outcomes] should be relevant to the mission of the institution and should not conflict with its overall direction.
  2. [Program outcomes] should reflect the current philosophy and actions of the department, program or school within the institution. They should exhibit the consensus view and avoid statements reflecting the view of a few individuals.
  3. [Program outcomes] should be written clearly and simply. Writers should avoid complex statements of multiple outcomes, avoid jargon, and avoid complicated phrasing.
  4. Whenever possible, goals should be stated in measurable terms." (p. 290)
