Your Vote Counts! Register to Vote at LCC on Constitution Day

LANSING 9/13/12 – Lansing Community College (LCC) and the Lansing City Clerk are making it easy for students, staff, faculty and community members to register to vote by holding a voter registration drive on Monday, September 17 in the center of LCC’s downtown campus.

The drive will take place between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on the Washington Mall in front of the Arts & Sciences building.

The event is taking place on U.S. Constitution Day, which began in 2004 after Congress passed a law designating September 17 as the day for citizens to commemorate the signing of the U.S. Constitution and learn more about our founding document.

This year marks the 225th anniversary of the Constitution’s signing in 1787. Through it the founding fathers established a representative democracy where the people elect their leaders.  Five amendments to the constitution have expanded the participation of American citizens in the electoral process.

“We are committed to guiding our young people to be effective civic leaders for the next generation,” said LCC President Brent Knight.  “Voting is the first step in that process.”

“Less than half of 18-year-olds are registered to vote nationally,” said Lansing City Clerk Chris Swope.  “I am pleased to work with LCC to encourage voter participation locally.”

The deadline for registering to vote for the November 6th general election is October 9.
